Could you be the next Greatest Dancer? If you want to be part of a growing generation of dancers, choreographers and teachers, then tighten up your technique and sharpen up your industry skill set on the ONLY Commercial Dance course in the region.
The arts industry contributed £29.5 billion to the UK economy and in the last year has made a 7.2 per cent increase on the previous year. The UK arts and culture industry support 260,300 full-time equivalent jobs and Dance is one of the most creative, challenging and dynamic career routes you can pursue.
Our Commercial Dance provision gives you control of your own development, choosing specialisms that suit you whilst tapping in to your potential to give you the confidence to seek employment in this exciting industry. Studying a vocational qualification enables you to freely to explore options, take creative risks and choose a path that challenges and excites you.
Our vocational programme mirrors current working practices of the dance industry and focusses on building your skills and knowledge across dance genres specifically, through technique, choreography and performance. The course provides workshop opportunities with prominent industry dancers and choreographers, both in college and at external venues; with opportunities to visit key dance events throughout the academic year such as ‘Move It’ and ‘Can You Dance?’.
Our highly trained and experienced team, work with you to up-skill all aspects of your training which include you taking weekly classes in classical ballet and modern jazz, urban dance, workshops in musical theatre and lyrical dance.
Weekly choreography sessions enable you to hone in further on your creativity skill set and develop wider employability skills, skills which are vital when working in the performing arts industry.
Supporting practical elements, you will also learn dance business and study progression routes in to higher education and dance employment.
On Commercial Dance you will get to push your physical limitations and build up core strength and flexibility, you will take part in workshops with up and coming dancers and choreographers, participate in dance shows to live audiences and create a portfolio of work. Plus you will make friends for life, whilst taking one step closer to securing your dream job.
Through the University Arts London (UAL) qualification, you will build skills, competencies and confidence in the creative process. Learn how to reflect on your practice and unlock your creative potential. Assessment is formative and is designed to help you be the best you can. Practical work, concept development, design to how you creatively problem solve will all be developed.
At the end of year one you will participate in a Major Dance Event, this will demonstrate a body of work that highlights your strengths and personal interests in areas in which you excel; reflecting and analysing research, contextualising, presentation and, of course, your practical skills.
Top-up onto the Extended Diploma in year two and you will advance your skill set and professional qualities building towards the Extended Site Specific Project, your chance to show how far you have come. Assessed on your professional portfolio of work, you will be ready to progress to higher education or other training routes.

Gateshead College and Commercial Dance will support you throughout your studies to help you take your next steps, be that studying for a degree at university or auditioning for a specialist vocational schools or conservatoires.
You will get to build a portfolio and make valuable contacts that could lead to opportunities working within industry leaders. If you want to go down an entrepreneurial route, we have that covered too with our Beacon award winning Careers Team and their expert advice.
Four GCSE grades at 4 or above, including either English or maths, or a relevant qualification at Level 2 or appropriate experience plus an audition.

This course is free to those aged under 19 years old.
Most people aged 19 years and over can qualify for free or reduced price course fees and there are grants and bursaries you can apply for to help cover the costs of coming to college, depending on your circumstances.
If you already have a full level 3 qualification and are aged 19 years over, you can apply for an Advanced Learning Loan or pay the fee upfront in full and qualify for a 10% discount.
