So You've Got Your Results - Now What?

After my results, I enrolled into the Sixth Form that was part of my school, I played it safe and stayed with all of my friends. I’m glad I went to Sixth Form because I met some people who are very good friends of mine to this day and had some great experiences, but I’ll be honest, I was pretty miserable. My teachers were lovely, my courses were interesting but the whole school environment? I was so over it. I wanted the freedom of being able to wear what I want, make my own informed adult decisions, have the opportunity to thrive and most of all, be treat as something other than a statistic.

As soon as I got my Sixth Form results, which was equally as terrifying, I knew the path I was going on. I was talking to my friend who went to Gateshead College at the time, and I explained that I quite fancied doing Business as I knew one day, I wanted to be self employed. My friend suggested I visit the college and see what it was all about, so I did.

I was told that I should apply for the Foundation Degree but as soon as I read the BTEC Business Management, I was sold. I wanted to do that. It was such a brilliant course with lots of ‘hands on’ learning. If you’re pondering on business, I’d highly recommend it. I’ve learned so many things that I will use for the rest of my life. Things I should have been taught in school but wasn’t. How to write a  CV, how to write a job description, calculate my income and expenditure (how much is coming in and going out). All skills that I’ll be using in everyday life.

When I got to college, I noticed that maths and English GCSE’s were going on. I had no idea that you could resit your core GCSE’s in college if you weren’t happy with the results or needed to get up to a grade C. Knowing that at the time of doing my exams and getting my results would have been a huge weight lifted off my shoulders for me, as I would have known I’d get a second chance.

So, if you’re not sure what to do now that you’ve got your results, I’d recommend having a look around a few colleges if you haven’t already. They may just offer you something you didn’t know you were looking for.

Katie.
